The whole week (and weeks) before Ben was born we would prep for his arrival, if it would happen that night. We had sitters set up and the house clean, clothes packed. I had been having annoying contractions for weeks that never got hard enough to really time for very long. I always ended up falling asleep through them and waking up fine, with no baby! I never knew when it was going to happen, but figured it would happen quite close to my due date. I even scheduled an induction for Friday before the due date, but canceled it and decided if I made it to my appt Monday I would schedule an induction asap!
On Saturday morning we did some house work and the kids had a Primary Program practice and pizza party at the church at 10. I went for a walk with Chaco, I even passed people telling them I wanted to get the baby out! I decided last minute to walk down the hill out of our neighborhood and to just keep going all the way to the church. It was a nice walk, but Chaco and I both needed water and I could not get close enough to the lake we passed to get him a drink. We met Nate at the Church house and I was surprised that I did not have a single contraction!
That night I had my normal lame contractions and ended up falling asleep after giving up on timing them. The were harder than normal, but not really progressing. At around 2 am Mikah came into our room to get into our bed and I felt a pop and thought maybe my water had broke! Sure enough it had (thankfully not a gush). The contractions started immediately. Very hard and close together. After about 2 I woke up Nate and told him we had to go! We live very close to the hospital so I was not concerned about our bags. I just knew we did not have much time. Our first person lined up to take the kids lived too far away in my opinion as did option number 2 and 3 so we ended up calling the Owens who live a few houses down. Even then I was worried we were running out of time.
On the way to the hospital I realized I did not have my wallet, but there was not time to turn around. We got to the entrance to the "tower" only to see it was locked and we had to use the ER to get in. Back in the car and to the ER, only to find Nate had dropped his wallet. Back in the car to find the wallet and then back to the ER. We got to Labor and delivery at about 2:18. Pretty quick. They admitted me and realized that they needed to hurry. Probably because when the took me to change I had to kneel down and hold onto the tub to get through my contraction!
We told them our birth plan. EPIDURAL! and even requested the CRNA we wanted. I got into the bed and they checked to see how far along I was. I was already dilated to a 9 and they explained that there would be no time for the epidural! I almost cried right there. I had not plans to deliver without pain meds. I tried to remember all the things I had learned about dealing with pain from my birthing class 8 years ago. I found something to focus on and breathed deep. The nurse helped me with my breathing. I told Nate I would hold onto the bed handles rather than break his hand but I do recall grabbing his jacket through one contraction.
I had no idea what I was doing and probably started pushing too soon, but he came! I felt bad because he probably did not feel very welcome with me yelling "I can't" and "Just get him out!". He was 8lbs 4oz. Our biggest baby yet (and I knew he would be as they all got bigger and bigger). He was born at 3:01 am, less than 45 min after arriving at the hospital.
Some of my friends welcomed me to the natural birth club. I told them I did not want to be in their crazy club and I was not a willing participant. Now that it has been a while I can say it is good to know I have experienced it but it was pretty hard. I am glad he came so quickly!
